A friend recently bought a 2005 Subaru Outback 3.0R. It’s faster than my Legacy 2.5i, the more modern 5 speed auto shifts much, much better than my old 4 speed, it sounds better, is more comfortable, rides nicer, and gets the same fuel economy. One day my car is going to need the head gaskets replaced, so the engine will have to come out. I don’t know if that will come first, or if the transmission will shit the bed first, but both things are likely, if not guaranteed. If possible, I’d much rather find a crashed Outback of the same generation with the H6, and have an EZ30 and 5 speed auto, instead of doing the head gaskets on my 2.5.
I’d also like the nicer ride of the Outback, and the ground clearance, and the comfier seats, and the sunroof......honestly the only thing I don’t like about the Outback over my Legacy is the body cladding.

Those seats alone will keep me from ever considering another Outback of that generation. Half the reason I never drove mine was because of how bad my body felt after 15 minutes, and this is coming from a 220lb guy who daily drives with a B ride one piece r acing seat.
Bugeye Wrx had some nice seats though...

If you got a good parts car you could also swap the seats and suspension over.

Were they the base cloth seats? The leather ones in my friends are better than the cloth seats in my Legacy, which I assume are the same as the cloth seats in the OB. I really hate them, if my volvo isn’t up to road tripping this summer, I’m honestly gonna but something for the sole purpose of driving to Saskatoon without murdering my back, neck, and shoulders in the L egacy.

That’s what I’m thinking I’ll do. I’ll probably also switch to smaller wheels so I can have more sidewall

Yes, base cloth.
Do you think t he seats themselves different? I always just assumed that the upholstery was the only difference. I miss having Volvo seats

I think they must be a little different, maybe thicker/softer cushions. The headrests also aren’t as angled forward, which my main problem with my seats. I might put them in a vise or something to bend the bars so they aren’t so angled.
Yeah, even the seats in my 144 are a kind of magnificent.

The H6 is nice, isn’t it?
I believe this is legal now in your neck-of-the-woods...
Also...

Yeah, it seems like a whole other league than the EJ25.
That’s a cool one, but I don’t want RHD. If I was gonna import one I’d go for a euro manual 3.0R....or also for that kind of money I could have a euro e28 535i...

Owned one. The interior was slightly better, same wonky Subaru electrics. You don’t really notice the extra power vs the 2.5 ; it’s just that every maneuver is just a little less dramatic. The 5EAT is also much less reliable than the 4EAT, least from what I’ve read. I don’t know how feasible a swap of drivetrains is.

I liek htis plan. Subarus are fun because they are Lego cars - so much commonality between platforms so it’s easy to do things like engine and transmission swaps.

Having owned an ‘06
Outback XT with cloth seats, and currently an ‘08 with leather; the leather do feel better. That being said, I never really thought the difference was huge, but I happened to like the cloth seats also. I’m 170lbs, and that might be the difference there.

I have an 05 Outback 3.0R and it’s been great to me. The only thing I’ve really had to fix other than general maintenance is the tension pulley, those seem to go every 50,000 miles or so. I’m over 176,000 on mine.

At that point, why not XT?

From the passenger seat at least, the more grunt of the 3.0 plus the better gearing of the 5EAT was quite noticeable. That’s disappointing that it’s a less reliable transmission, it shifts so much smoother than my 4EAT.
I think I need to find a Subaru specialist mechanic and ask them about feasibility

I’m 145lbs and 5'10". I might just be the wrong size for the seats or something. If I take the headrest off, I can adjust it to be more comfortable, but that’s not terribly safe...

Well that’s really good to hear. I’m not anticipating my 2.5 making it anywhere near that number without the head gaskets failing somewhere in there

I’m more into displacement than turbos, but I’ve also never had a turbo car, so maybe I’d like it. That said, the reputation of that engine makes me nervous.

I’m not saying it’s without flaws, but I also don’t think it’s as bad as people say either. I bought mine at 100k miles just after the timing belt was done and have had it for 3 years and almost 60k miles now. Half of that has been on a stage 2 tune. I’ve drag raced it, taken it down some rough trails, used it like a truck, and flogged it on back roads. I’ve had a few issues, but none have been with the engine or turbo. Removing the screens in the oil lines to the turbo, fresh Rotella T6 every 3500 miles and an STI catless up pipe take care of most of the known issues. I’ve heard some things about the stock tune and valve issues, but never experienced that. Now that I have a mild tune on it that’s hopefully addressed as well. I’m hopeful I’ll see 200k with it on the stock engine and while you never know, I see no reason right now that I shouldn’t make it.
But I get it, there is the 3.0R option too. I just happen to like turbo cars personally

My first H6 experience was with an EZ36D. Needless to say, I really need a Subaru H6 in my life.
I’m not sure how much rhd would bother me.
